I thought yogurt would be a great way to add protein to my diet, and since I don’t like to cook for breakfast, it’s the perfect fit, especially with the new high-protein options on the market. I’ve tried them all, and will give you the lowdown on which ones to avoid, buy at your own risk, or are enjoyable to eat.
Ratio Protein Coconut Yogurt Cultured Dairy Snack
The first bite was very good. Intriguing even. After previous experience with high-protein yogurts, I was braced for disappointment. But this was enjoyable. I tried the coconut flavor, which was a bit sweet with just the right amount of flavoring. It was rich, creamy, not super thick, and had a nice texture. I’d buy it again!

The only drawback is the calorie count at 170, but sacrifices needed to be made somewhere to offer 25 grams of protein. It’s an excellent exchange, and I could see eating this for a snack or breakfast on the run. Heads up to those who are counting: it also has 3 grams of sugar and 3.5 grams of fat.
You might notice this is called a dairy snack, instead of yogurt. It does not legally meet the definition of yogurt because it has sunflower/avocado oil added to it. The additional ingredients enhance the keto-friendly fat profile, but it means it fails the standard, non-fat-added definition of traditional yogurt.
Hands down, flavor-wise, it beats the other high-protein yogurts that I’ve tried. I’m not sure about eating it regularly for breakfast, as the calorie count is a little high. I usually go for a lower-calorie yogurt, but they also have about half the protein, and this really did taste good. I’ll probably add it to my weekly rotation of yogurts and see how it works out with my meal plan.
Chobani 20g Protein Raspberry Lemon

A very thick yogurt, with a pleasant, tart raspberry-lemon flavor that, with my first spoonful, I thought, not bad, I can eat this regularly. But after a few bites, the flavor went from sweet to sharp and my mouth began to pucker. I had to force myself to finish it, which I think had more to do with the thickness than the flavor. Somehow it just became too much eat.
I really wanted to like this yogurt because of the high protein count. I keep buying it, thinking it really isn’t that bad, only to be disappointed about halfway through. It’s a little high on the calorie count at 140, but its 20 grams of protein make up for it. You’ll notice it comes in a larger than average container. It’s a 6.7 oz cup where most yogurt cups are only 5.3 oz, so I’m guessing they increased the size of the container to increase the protein count when compared to others on the market. Also, for those counting, it has 3 grams of fat and 6 grams of sugar, but none added.
Overall, I’m not a fan. Ironically, I will probably buy it now and then to give it one more chance because the flavor is pretty good and you can’t go wrong with how much protein it has.
Oikos Pro 20g Protein, Key Lime Yogurt

Another super-thick yogurt with a high protein count. It has a good tart, lime flavor that is almost mild as it is not overpowering. Initially, I really enjoyed it, but maybe because it was so thick I had a hard time finishing it.
This has an excellent protein count at 20 grams, and with only 130 calories, it’s a good choice. Heads up to those that count: it has 3 grams of fat and 3 grams of sugar, none added. With an average container, you are getting more protein in your serving of yogurt – for fewer calories, than other comparable brands.
I’ll buy this again, simply for the protein count. I liked how it tasted; I just struggled with finishing the product because of the thickness.
Kroger® Protein Strawberry Yogurt Cup

I had high hopes for this yogurt since its price was considerably lower than the other three I tried, and everyone likes a bargain. Trust me when I say this: no matter the price, it wasn’t a bargain. I didn’t know that yogurt could be grainy, but this one was. It was a thick, paste-like yogurt, but with a fine, grainy substance mixed throughout.
I’m guessing the flavoring is in powder form and didn’t mix completely? All I know is that it felt weird to eat. The flavor wasn’t great either, as it was an extremely artificial strawberry. I really had to force myself to finish this, as the texture was so off-putting.
With 20 grams of protein and 130 calories, it could be a good choice if you can get past the texture. Maybe one of the other flavors is better? It also has 2.5-grams of fat, and 4 grams of sugar, none added.
I won’t be buying this again. The texture was too strange to deal with.
The Take Away
Of the four high-protein yogurts tried, I only really liked one. Ratio. But I’m ever the optimist, so I’ll likely buy three of the four again. Initially, the flavors were pretty good; it was the thickness of the product that troubled me. If you don’t have a problem with that sort of thing, chances are you’ll be fine with any of these choices. All of them offer an excellent amount of protein for their calories and will make a good addition to a meal or for a snack.
I have high hopes for the next round of yogurts, as they are slightly lower in protein content and calories, so maybe they will be more appealing.
