Ultra High-Protein Yogurts for GLP-1: Honest Reviews & Rankings

Protein-packed Greek yogurt

I thought yogurt would be a great way to add protein to my diet, and since I don’t like to cook for breakfast, it’s the perfect fit, especially with the new high-protein options on the market. I’ve tried quite a few of them, and I’ll give you the lowdown on which ones are worth buying, which are tolerable, and which I won’t touch again.

What I Look for in a GLP-1 Friendly Yogurt

  • High protein
  • Reasonable calories
  • Not overly tart or sweet
  • Smooth easy to tolerate texture
  • Light enough to finish on low-appetite days

The first bite was very good. Intriguing even. After previous experience with high-protein yogurts, I was braced for disappointment. But this was enjoyable.  I tried the coconut flavor, which was a bit sweet with just the right amount of flavoring.  It was rich, creamy, not super thick, and had a nice texture.  I’d buy it again!

Ratio coconut yogurt

The only drawback is the 170 calories, but sacrifices clearly had to be made somewhere to squeeze in 25 grams of protein.  It’s an excellent exchange, and I could see eating this for a snack or breakfast on the run.  Heads up to those who are counting: it also has 3 grams of sugar and 3.5 grams of fat.

You might notice this is not called yogurt, but a dairy snack.  It does not legally meet the definition of yogurt because it has sunflower/avocado oil added to it.  The additional ingredients enhance the keto-friendly fat profile, but it means it fails the standard, non-fat-added definition of traditional yogurt.

Hands down, flavor-wise, it beats the other high-protein yogurts that I’ve tried.  I’m not sure about eating it regularly for breakfast, as the calorie count is a little high.  I usually go for a lower-calorie yogurt, but they also have about half the protein, and this really did taste good.  I’ll probably add it to my weekly rotation of yogurts and see how it works out with my meal plan.

Chobani 20g protein raspberry lemon Greek yogurt

An extremely thick yogurt with a pleasant, tangy raspberry-lemon flavor that, with my first spoonful, I thought, not bad, I could eat this every morning.  But after a few bites, the flavor became overpowering and made my mouth pucker.   I had to force myself to finish it, which I think had more to do with its paste-like quality than the flavor.  Somehow it just became too heavy and too much to swallow.

I really wanted to like this yogurt because of the high protein count.  I keep buying it, thinking it really wasn’t that bad, only to be disappointed about halfway through.  With 140 calories, it’s a little high, but it’s got a great protein count at 20 grams.

You’ll also notice it comes in a larger than average container.  It’s a 6.7 oz container where most yogurt containers are only 5.3 oz, so I’m guessing they increased the size of the container to increase the protein count when compared to others on the market. Also, for those counting, it does have 3 grams of fat and 6 grams of sugar, but none added.

Overall, I’m not a fan. Ironically, I will probably buy it now and then to give it one more chance because the flavor is pretty good and you can’t go wrong with how much protein it has.

Oikos pro 20g protein lime Greek yogurt

Another high-protein yogurt that I found overly thick.  It has a pleasant tangy lime flavor that isn’t overpowering.  Initially, I really enjoyed it, but it became hard to swallow and unappealing. The yogurt was just horribly dense, and it was difficult to eat the last few bites.

I’m beginning to wonder if the problem might be the meds limiting my appetite and not the yogurt itself.  I just have difficulty with super thick yogurt.

This has an excellent protein count at 20 grams, and with only 130 calories, it’s a good choice.  Heads up to those that count: it has 3 grams of fat and 3 grams of sugar, none added.  With an average container, you are getting more protein in your serving of yogurt – for fewer calories, than other comparable brands.

I’ll buy this again, simply for the protein count.  I enjoyed its flavor, but its density made finishing this yogurt a struggle.

Kroger 20g protein Greek yogurt, strawberry

I had high hopes for this yogurt since its price was considerably lower than the other three I tried, and everyone likes a bargain.  Trust me when I say this: no matter the price, it wasn’t a bargain.  I didn’t know that yogurt could be grainy, but this one was.  It was a thick, paste-like yogurt, but with a fine, grainy substance mixed throughout.

I’m guessing the flavoring is in powder form and didn’t mix completely?  All I know is that it felt weird to eat.  The flavor wasn’t great either, as it was an extremely artificial strawberry.  I really had to force myself to finish this, as the texture was so off-putting.

With 20 grams of protein and 130 calories, it could be a good choice if you can get past the texture. Maybe one of the other flavors is better? It also has 2.5-grams of fat, and 4 grams of sugar, none added.

I won’t be buying this again.  The texture was too strange to deal with.

Final Ranking

Best Overall Flavor

Ratio Protein Coconut Yogurt

Best Protein-to-Calorie Ratio

Oikos Pro Key Lime

Best If You Like Thick Greek Yogurt

Chobani 20g Protein

Would Not Buy Again

Kroger Protein Strawberry

Of the four high-protein yogurts tried, I only really liked one. Ratio.  But I’m ever the optimist, so I’ll likely buy three of the four again.  Initially, the flavors were pretty good; it was the density of the products that troubled me.  If you don’t have a problem with that sort of thing, chances are you’ll be fine with any of these choices.  All of them offer an excellent amount of protein for their calories and will make an excellent addition to a meal or for a snack.

One thing I’ve learned on a GLP-1 is that texture matters much more than it used to. Foods that are overly thick, heavy, or difficult to finish can become unappealing fast, especially on lower-appetite days. That’s why finding high-protein foods that are actually enjoyable to eat matters so much.

I have high hopes for the next round of yogurts, as they are slightly lower in protein content and calories, so maybe they will be more appealing.
